Getting to Know Stevens County WPAs
Getting to Know Stevens County WPAs
A WPA? Waterfowl Production Areas are plots of land set aside by the US Fish and Wildlife Service to protect the wetlands of the prairie pothole region and the waterfowl that depended on that area. There are 36,000 WPAs scattered across the US, and you can find 60 in Stevens County. All Waterfowl Production Areas contain some body of water and many WPAs aren't much larger than the small pothole that they protect. However, those which are often contain untouched prairie and ideal places for photography.
The map on the bottom right of this page is a google based and shows all the WPAs in Stevens County. You can use this to explore what is around and get directions. To its right is all the WPAs are listed by names. Clicking on a bold name will pull up a printable mini-map of the site and a small description. The rest pull up the DNR recreational compass. We plan on adding mini-maps for each WPA as we make them.
Use this interactive map to see what all is around, and what you can check out! If you want to know more about one of the WPAs, check out the PDFs to the right.
